How To Install Teleflex Pro Trim

I might need to rethink this. Thank you again for your help. While I considered leaving it as is, I did get a used gauge from Hobie on this board.

Your 90-HP four-stroke Mercury on your Montauk does NOT have a sender unit. You need to purchase that. Will send you photos.

Ask your dealer. The gauge has 3 wires. One should be black, this is ground. Look at the harness in the console for open connectors. The sender usually is on the inside if the engine bracket on either the left or right side. Looks like a small lever. Marsh posted 01:41 PM ET (US)             Phil: The gauge has 3 connections: to ground, to ignition power, and to sending unit.

To me that is absolutely stupid. Fishinchips posted 08:10 PM ET (US)             Phil, the 170 Montauk does not have the trim gauge. It has a tachometer, voltmeter and water pressure gauge. Ken Marsh posted 09:17 PM ET (US)             Fishinchips: Thanks much for the information. At least I now know I'm not crazy. Needing to buy a sending unit (another $45.99, plus tax) has made me have second thoughts about installing this gauge.

Trim Tilt Gauge Sending Unit - Moderated Discussion Areas               Trim Tilt Gauge Sending Unit Author Topic:   Trim Tilt Gauge Sending Unit Marsh posted 04:34 PM ET (US)         I bought a tilt/trim indicator gauge today for $19.99 at Boater's World. The instructions say I must have a sending unit for the gauge to work. That makes sense. The guy at the check out counter said most newer outboards with trim/tilt have a sending unit standard. Where is the sending unit on a 2005 Mercury 115-HP four-stroke? The install appears to be easy once I find the sending unit. Gonna try the owner's manual, too, but I don't recall anything about a sending unit last time I read the manual. No mention of a sending unit in the Mercury engine manual.

I am almost positive all engines that have power tilt/trim can support the gauge. Marsh posted 06:16 PM ET (US)             Phil: Many thanks for your trouble. I will check my engine again tonight when I get home. No snow here--none since 1993. Not complaining, though.

It is amazing what a help this is. While I agree you can adjust without it, I like just looking at the gauge. There are several positions I have established for load and location. When I need to move, I just adjust, take a glance at the gauge for that known position and done. Marsh posted 06:33 PM ET (US)             Can anyone recommend any vendors who sell the sender? Local boat store has none in stock, but would order one for $39.99 plus tax, paid in advance.

It does show a tan wire, and a brown/white wire in the wiring diagram, but the only reference is 'to/from trim/tilt'. Guess I'll give the local Mercury dealer a call. Any other ideas? Marsh Phil Tyson posted 09:22 AM ET (US)             I believe you need a wiring diagram. The wires are in the harness. Backuptrans android whatsapp transfer crack key serial.

You need to get the trim sender kit. I believe your part number is: 82-1180a6 In the kit, you will get the sender unit (2 wires on it), an extra pig tail wire and various nuts and bolts. They also give you instructions on mounting and routing the cable. Routing the cable has two choices. Once routed, you remove the cowling. Connect up to the brown/white wire. The sender is mounted on the starboard side of the motor.

A fourth connection for lighting is optional. I have scoured my engine mounting bracket, inside and out, and see no evidence of anything that could be a sending unit. I called my selling dealer, and he is similarly puzzled. I must conclude that a 2005 Mercury 115-HP four-stroke cannot accommodate a tilt/trim gauge.

Thanks, Marsh davej14 posted 07:34 PM ET (US)             I found a sender in stock at Bass Pro. Also got the merc gauge from them which matched my other instruments but it had to be ordered. Marsh posted 08:27 PM ET (US)             Dave: Do you happen to have a BassPro part number for that sender from BassPro?

Ken (fishinchips) montaukman posted 10:10 PM ET (US)             Ken, Thanks for the pictures, very helpful. I am on the fence as well about this gauge. I bought a Teleflex gauge that closely matches the Mercury gauges. I wasn't aware that the sending unit was $45. That puts me in the hole for over $70. I can but a few nice rod holders with that.

The sending unit kit has to be purchased from a Mercury dealer, and is not cheap. The REAL problem is that the SS attaching screws in the aluminum engine bracket quickly freeze in place, making adjustments impossible, and the screws impossible to remove. I even found the whole assembly freezes up and stops working after a while.

If you must install one of these contraptions, be sure to use ANTI-SEIZE compound on the screws before installing them into the engine bracket, or you will be soon drilling them out and re-tapping LHG posted 08:43 PM ET (US)          PS - I have several Mercury OEM power trim indicator gauges for sale cheap if anybody wants one!

I have inferred that these wires would be the connection points for a sending unit, if indeed there was one. However, it is possible that I simply overlooked the sending unit in my search yesterday. My eyesight isn't what it used to be, but then again, it never was. Later, Marsh fishinchips posted 06:54 PM ET (US)             I installed my trim sender on my 2003 90-HP four-stroke.

My engine is a 2005 Mercury 115-HP four-stroke, the boat is a 2004 Montauk 170. I am OK on the console wiring, there are only four to hook up: one wire to ground (black), one wire to ignition POS (I'll find that one easily enough), one wire to light (tap to other gauge light circuit), and one wire to that pesky sending unit, once I find it.

The thing that's so puzzling is that the local Mercury dealer himself couldn't tell me where it was (or IF it was). I did notice that, inside the cowl, there is a tan wire ending in a female connector, and a brown/white wire ending with a male connector. The engine wiring diagram mentions in passing that these wires are 'for tilt/trim'.

Puzzled, Marsh Phil Tyson posted 02:32 PM ET (US)             I have posted a shot of where mine is. If you look at the black wire it enters the bracket and connects to the sender just on the inside of the bracket.

(Control any one of these functions..) Engine Trim/Tilt Jackplate Horn (.. Or any two with Pro Trim Dual!) NOTE: When properly installed, this engine trim control allows adjustment of trim settings on various engines by attaching to either a bezel or boot (mechanical & tilt steering) or the front of a helm (SeaStar hydraulic steering) and by splicing into existing engine trim wiring. Mechanical steering bezels must allow for proper installation of mounting screws (see Pro Trim instructions). Refer to engine manual for additional details about trim wiring. Pro Trim is not suitable for use with pre-1991 SeaStar helms (with domed oil seal cover).

You may need to raise your engine 3/4 of the way to see it. It should be above the tilt motor assembly. If there were not 13 inches of new snow around the boat, I would take a photo right this minute. When I wired my gauge, I found spare connectors in the harness in the console. Just matched all colors and done. Are you okay on the wiring in the console? What model/year is the boat?

Maybe since 1997, the design has been improved, but I trim by looking at the engine and feeling boat performance. Works fine for me, even with twins.

I may just return it for a refund--more trouble than it's worth. After some experience, one can tell by feel whether trim is correct or not. Sure would fill in that empty space on my panel nicely, though. Marsh fishinchips posted 09:40 PM ET (US)             I dislike turning my head to see where the motor is. Every boat I own has a trim gauge. I could not stand it any longer. I just had to get the trim gauge and the sender.
