One of the highlights of the evening for me was the performance of 'Handle With Care' by the 1980s supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. Lynne brought down the house as one of new backup singers impeccably imitated the late rock icon Roy Orbison. People all around me rose from their seats and cheered when images of Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Orbison flashed across the screen and elicited a nostalgic memory trip among their thousands of fans gathered in the historic Forum this warm summer night. As Lynne ended the marathon setlist with the required Mr. Blue Sky, I believe that he did his music right.

With a decent copy Id like to review the overall sound of this album. I was expecting really high quality as it is a first press UK issue, but I was left a little on the fence. The first side especially feels very balanced, almost too much so. Rarely does anything stick out, except when some instruments and even the vocals do the opposite, feeling too recessed.

Jeff Lynne wrote the entire album in three and a half weeks after a sudden burst of creativity while hidden away in his rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. It took a further two months to record in Munich. Side three of the original double LP consisted of the symphonic Concerto for a Rainy Day, composed of four separate tracks which together made up a cohesive suite, instead of one continuous track. The inclement weather effects heard on 'Concerto' were real and recorded by Lynne during a very rainy summer in Munich 1977.

The original LP was mixed in but was only released in this format in South America. Many of these 'quad' tracks appeared with the SQ encoding intact on the 'First Light' series edition of the album and on a later double-CD release entitled Early ELO, 1971–1974 (available only as an import in the US). The entire 'quad' version with SQ encoding intact has since been released on disc 3 of the Harvest Years compilation.
