I don't know INPA or DIR although i hear about them all the time i bought this before i even got the car so i wasn't aware of what the best was. Soft does some cool thing that most others don't, like letting me change the speed that I want the doors to lock at, and I'd like the drivers window to go up with 1 touch so I don't have to hold the button. If I can get this going, it will make it available for others who may want to run this cheep alternative to something much more expensive. Try plugging the cable into the car with it running and plugged into your PC, then running the program.

Up til now I was reliant on AutoZone to read a code when I had issues. The only codes that were ever read were one for the CPS and another for the thermostat. In BMW e46's built prior to mid 2000 you must jump pin 2 to 17 and pin 2 to 20 on the round under hood connector for this in car obd reader to be able to access all of the diagnostics. Be sure to google the BMW forums if you have any questions. I did read the z3 and some other bmw used the round connect thru 2007. Also be careful on jumping the pins on the round connector as I round a few incorrect diagrams. All in all this tool rocks the house. Finally you dont need windows xp. Google ftdi chip d2xx drivers and you will find working drivers for windows 10.

Received my PA Soft BMW Scanner 1.4.0 today and decided to do some testing and coding. I chatted with the seller and successfully installed the PA Soft on Windows 7 system.
It will read most sections but not the DME (engine) section. To fix this you need to make a solder bridge to connect pins 7 and 8 together. Do this if you can read most sections but DME comes up blank. The software makes no attempt to explain what the codes do beyond a basic string that is rarely clear. You will need to look up things on forums.
But personally I am not recommend soldering pins, because Pin Setup is absolutely different that of a same series 740. Some software version of Pa-soft are not compatible with newer LCM’s ( i.e. LCM IV’s with HIGH Software & Hardware ). I was searching around uobd2 and finally get a BMW Scanner cable with pa-soft 1.4: I have successfully reprogrammed my LCM IV in Full with ZERO Tamper Dot. Make a connection under the hood. Originals are expensive but you can get cheap but hq chinese clones for around $350 USD like this: EDIABAS is a communication protocal which requires you to have BMW Standard Tools installed aswell - which isnt a bad thing! 
Tinted lenses are illegal in most states yet there are sponsors here who sell them. Many people have hacked into their DME to make their cars do things that are not supposed to be available on the US models. Or for more power. Removal of exhaust parts, etc. There are a bunch more.
